Data Lifetime

Data lifetime refers to the length of time digital information is stored, accessible, and usable before deletion or expiration. It plays a key role in surveillance, data retention policies, and storage management.

For example, video footage may have a data lifetime of 30 days, depending on legal, operational, or compliance requirements. After this period, systems may automatically delete or archive the footage.

While longer data retention supports investigations, it also requires more storage capacity. Therefore, organizations must balance legal needs with technical limits.

By defining data lifetime clearly, security teams improve storage efficiency and meet compliance standards.
